The Guam Environmental Protection Agency (Guam EPA), along with partners in the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee, today announced the upcoming contests for Earth Week 2007.
Earth Week 2007 will be celebrated from April 16 to 22. This year's theme, "Protect Guam's Watersheds," focuses on water quality and what we can do to keep Guam's water safe and clean.
"This year's Earth Week theme was chosen to help raise awareness about how fragile Guam's watersheds are," said Lorliee T. Cristosomo, acting administrator of Guam EPA. "Our community needs to proactively protect water sources from different types of pollution, including illegal dumping and erosion."
Contests for students will be part of this year's celebration: the 3-D Artwork Contest, the Governor's Green School Awards, and the Earth Day Banner Contest. There will also be a fashion show for participants of all ages to model garments created from reused materials.
Awards will be presented to the winners of the fashion show and contests at the Earth Week Island Pride Festival on Saturday, April 21, at Gov. Joseph Flores Beach Park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon.
Members of the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee include Guam EPA, Guam Coastal Management Program, Guam Department of Agriculture, Guam Visitors Bureau, Guam Department of Parks and Recreation, National Park Service, University of Guam Cooperative Extension Service and Marine Lab, and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.
