Governor Felix P. Camacho today announced the five winners of the 2007 Liberation Day Parade Aluminum Recycling Contest.
More than 1,100 pounds of aluminum, or about 33,000 cans, were collected throughout Liberation Day. The Ramirez family collected the most cans with a total of 320.3 pounds. The Guam Central Athletic Club collected 269.5 pounds of cans followed by 189.2 pounds from Marine Mania of George Washington High School. The fourth largest collector was the World Youth Day group with 134.2 pounds. The final winner of this year's contest was Tua Sablan with 71.5 pounds.
All five groups will receive free permits for a spot along the 2008 Liberation Day Parade route. The winners also will be given a chance to pick their spot before permits are issued to the general public.
"Everyone who participated in the contest showed their commitment to protecting our natural resources through recycling," said Governor Felix P. Camacho. "This contest exemplifies how residents, government agencies and private partners can work together to make a difference."
This contest was organized by the Environmental Education Subcommittee of the Guam Watershed Planning Committee. Members include the Guam Environmental Protection Agency, Office of the Governor, Bureau of Statistics and Plans - Guam Coastal Management Program, Guam Department of Agriculture, The Nature Conservancy, National Park Service, University of Guam Cooperative Extension Service and Marine Lab, and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council.
Other government agencies involved in the contest include the Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Public Works, Department of Corrections and the Department of Youth Affairs.
Private partners who assisted in the contest include the Guam Chamber of Commerce, Guahan Waste Control - Mr. Rubbishman, SOS Portables Corp., Ambros Inc. and Bensons.
